No matter if you want sandy beaches, mountain hiking, or a town steeped in history and culture, there are plenty of family-friendly vacation spots that are only about a tank of gas away from many of our locations in Georgia.
Destin, Florida: Located in the Florida panhandle, just south of Valparaiso and east of Pensacola, this low-key beach town totes miles of white sand beaches and emerald green, mild Gulf waters. Off the beach, enjoy dolphin-viewing boat tours, go-cart racing, water parks, and miniature golfing, not to mention seasonal festivals and fairs. For family friendly dining, our pick is Fud Puckers for no-fuss food and a fun atmosphere with a playground, puzzles, and games for kids. They even let you draw on the walls!
Charleston, South Carolina: First settled in 1680, this historic city has lots to see and do for history buffs and culture-seekers alike. From the historic French Quarter and Market Street shops to the military citadel and Fort Moultrie, for a small town there’s no shortage of activities. We suggest taking a carriage ride through downtown, visiting a 17th century church, going on a nighttime ghost tour, and sampling some famous Southern barbeque.
Chattanooga, Tennessee: Made famous by the Chattanooga Choo-Choo song by Glenn Miller, Chattanooga is a city that has risen substantially in popularity throughout the years with both visitors and inhabitants. Bordered by the Tennessee River to the north, there are plenty of natural spaces to visit in and around the city, including Ruby Falls and Rock City. There are no shortage of history and art museums, either, for culture buffs.
St. Augustine, Florida: Founded by explorer Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513 and claimed for Spain, this city is well-known as the oldest European settlement in the United States. Don’t miss the 17th century fort and national monument, Florida’s Oldest House, and the St. Augustine Lighthouse. For a bit of indoor fun, check out Ripley’s Believe It or Not and Potter’s Wax Museum.
Huntsville, Alabama: A center for aerospace technologies, Huntsville hosts a top-notch space and rocket museum with life-size replicas, IMAX cinema, and numerous exhibits. Check out the various other historical museums and enjoy the natural mountainous landscape in the numerous state parks, trails, and gardens.
Budget-friendly family fun really is just a tank of gas away! Consider camping and packing picnic lunches when possible to cut down even more on travel costs. Take some time to unplug and explore the area that’s right on your doorstep. Happy Summer!
